Privacy Policy

Effective date: 1 April 2026

1. Who we are

Lit🔥Land is operated by Literate Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. We are the data controller for the personal information you provide when using our platform.

If you have any questions about this policy or how we handle your data, contact us at hello@lit.land.

2. What data we collect

Account information

When you create an account we collect your name, username (handle), email address, and password (hashed — we never store it in plain text). If you sign in via Google or Apple OAuth, we receive your name, email, and profile picture from that provider.

Profile information

You may optionally provide a profile photo, biography, phone number, timezone, and the languages and subjects you are interested in.

Teacher-specific information

If you register as a teacher, we also collect your teaching qualifications, years of experience, teaching method, hourly rates, and availability. For payouts, we collect your bank account details or PayPal email address.

Payment information

Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your card number, CVV, or full payment card details — these are held securely by Stripe under PCI-DSS compliance. We do store records of purchases, amounts, and Stripe session IDs to manage your subscription, packages, and booking history.

Learning data

We collect your assessment results, dictionary entries, lesson progress, activity completions, and your coin and points balances to personalise your learning experience and track progress.

Audio recordings

When you use speaking activities or audio transcription features, your audio is sent to OpenAI (Whisper) for transcription. Audio recordings are not retained by us or by OpenAI after transcription is complete.

Messages

Messages you send to teachers, students, or through the platform are stored so that you and the recipient can read them. We do not read private messages except where required by law or to investigate a reported abuse.

Notifications and marketing

We store your notification preferences (email, push). If you opt in to our mailing list, we will send you product updates and learning tips. You can opt out at any time from your account settings.

Usage data

We collect standard server logs including IP address, browser type, pages visited, and timestamps to operate and improve the service. We do not use third-party analytics trackers.

6. Data retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your profile and personal information within 30 days, except where we are required to retain records for legal or financial purposes (e.g. payment records are kept for 7 years under UK tax law).

7. Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies only where necessary to operate the service:
